Why Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Feels Worse in the Morning

Do your ears feel more blocked in the morning than later in the day? You’re not imagining it.

For me, mornings were always worse. I’d wake up with the pressure, the blocked, muffled, sometimes echoing feeling, like my ears hadn’t caught up yet. I used to say, “I’m awake, but my ears need time to wake up.”

At first, I couldn’t understand why. It didn’t make sense that it could feel so different just from sleeping. What I eventually realised is that there isn’t just one reason for it.

One part of it can be how still everything has been for hours. The eustachian tube relies on small movements like swallowing and yawning to help equalise pressure. When that’s reduced for long periods, and things already aren’t working properly, it can leave everything feeling more blocked when you wake up.

At the same time, it’s not always that simple. For some people, things like jaw tension or grinding overnight can make it feel worse in a different way. For others, sinus pressure or allergies can play a part, especially after lying flat for hours.
